Thinking about giving someone a new pet for Christmas? In this Love Your Pet, Cristina Miliaresis, a veterinarian as well as the owner of Surf Paws Animal Hospital, and Fran Freitas, head technician shared with Diane Ako some things to consider first.
Dr. Miliaresis says it is never a good idea to surprise someone with a pet as a gift, but knowing someone is actively seeking a pet, and what they are looking for, would be the exception.
“Adding a pet to a family should be the decision of everyone that will be involved in their care and life. Pets become family members and certain types of animals make a better fit for different lifestyles and homes. Make sure to research on your breed so you know what you are getting into prior to purchase,” says Dr. Miliaresis
If you are going to get a pet, Freitas suggests, “A good starting point is to know the type of animal that everyone will agree on. Tthere are a large number of wonderful animals that can be adopted at local shelters. Going down to the shelter and meeting them is a great way to see if they will be a good fit. If a specific breed of dog or cat is wanted, it is very important to find a reputable breeder who takes excellent care of his or her animals. Make sure you can see the parents and where the puppies or kittens come from at the breeder’s home.”
